Part 1 · The Culture Is Building Its Own Economy
Look closely at this week and you can see the business behind the culture.

Tonight a Greenville native headlines halftime at an NBA home opener, and the moment comes with a merchandise collaboration sold inside the arena. Today an independent rapper releases a 12-track album digitally on her own label, while a specialist label sells limited physical runs of 100. And in Raleigh, the state is holding the first $45 million of a settlement that the General Assembly has not yet decided how to spend.
Three different stories. The same lesson: culture creates value, and the people who own the work, the distribution and the relationships decide where that value goes.
Eastern North Carolina has always produced the talent. What it has not always had is the infrastructure around the talent: the studios, the rights knowledge, the business skills, the media that documents the work, and the pipelines that turn a creative skill into a career. That gap is the story this magazine was built to cover.
The money conversation is also local. This month the state's Rural Infrastructure Authority approved an $80,000 grant for a 56,260-square-foot expansion of Edgecombe Furniture in Greenville, a project expected to create 10 jobs and about $3.85 million in planned spending, according to NC Commerce. Pitt County received a ceremonial $4.75 million check from state lawmakers, $4.5 million of it to help Pitt-Greenville Airport land a second airline, The Daily Reflector reported. In Rocky Mount, Buc-ee's has started the permit process for a travel center that WRAL reports would bring 200 jobs.
